Getting around Naxos Island

On such a large island as Naxos which has so many beaches and such remarkable sights to see, sightseeing takes on a new interest.

The basic sightseeing tour organised by tourist offices is that of "Chora-Egares-Apollonas" which follows the northwestern axis of Naxos Island.

Tourist offices naturally organize daily excursions to the northwestern beaches of Naxos (Agia Anna, Alykos, Kalandos) and another tour to other Cycladic islands such as: Iraklia-Koufonisia and Delos-Mykonos-Santorini.

If you have your own means of transportation, you can organise your own tour travelling the basic roads of Naxos Island to see:

Chora-Egares-Apolonas: you will likely travel through green Egares with Naxos's own wind park and the beach of Amiti. Following that you will find the monastery of Faneromeni and the Abrami beach. This is then followed by the monastery of Agias with a tower bearing the same name and you will end up at Apollona, where you can enjoy freshly caught fish and admire the ancient quarry with the famous Kouros.

Kinidaros-Stavros Keramotis-Koronos: this route will introduce you to a wonderful panoramic view of both sides (East-West) of the island when you stop at Stavro Keramotis. After that you can continue on to Koronos which is one of the most traditional villages on Naxos.

Tragea-Filoti-Apiranthos: the basin of Tragea with its extensive olive groves shows a totally different side of the island. Do not omit to visit the towers of Gratsia and Papadaki. You can then travel on to Filoti which is one of the largest and most beautiful villages of Naxos situated at the foot of mount Zas with its church (Panagia Filotitisa) and its tower. Last you can go to Apiranthos the most delightful village on the island of Naxos which will richly reward you with its unique architecture, towers and 4 museums (Archaeological, Geological, Folk, and Natural history).

Moutsouna-Panormos: from Apirantho one can take the downhill to Moutsouna, the especially charming seaside village where on can order fresh fish and admire the remains of the now deserted emery mine cable car system still in place; or travel onwards to the southeastern shores to end up at Panormos.

Southwestern beaches: another equally pleasant drive is the tour along the southwestern beaches. Agios Prokopis, Agia Anna, Plaka, Orkos, Mikri Vigla, Kastraki, Alykos and Pyrgaki each is more beautiful than the previous, and all waiting for your pleasure.

Kalandos-Agiasos: this is the most "difficult" of routes since the route is via dirt road to a large extent. It is worth it however if you want to explore the more remote beaches of Naxos Island. At the halfway point of the journey you can stop to admire the tower of Himaros.
